Need Exhaust Sytem - Recommendations?
« on: May 11, 2011 - 06:04:13 PM »
I've got a 74 Barracuda with a 360 engine and tti headers (2.5 inch).  I need to get exhaust and am looking at a flow master set up (considered tti but it's too expensive for me).  Summit has the flow master setup on e-bay at $542 with free shipping.

Has anyone had experience with flow master exhaust?  Any suggestions on where to get the best price - should I call Summit directly or purchase through e-bay?

I'd appreciate any feedback/suggestions.

Thanks
Dave

I used a 2.5 inch Thrush exhaust system on my 74 Cuda.

The fit was pretty good, had to trim the tail pipes to fit.

The pipes are not madrel bent but the are not wrinkle bent, sort of a combination.  I am sure there are better performing / flowing systems but for the price I think it was worth it.  The kit has a H-pipe and sounds pretty good.

You have to look through sumitt's web site to find it, it does not pop up in the usual search.  You can also find it on thrush web site and search the part number on sumitt's site.

I tried the Sumitt brand kit as well, nice made kit, but did not fit the cuda at all!!!

Good luck.

I just bought a complete header back 2.5 SST system from Pypes.  Not installed yet but the parts look really good.  The price with SST Cuda valence tips was A LOT cheaper than TTI.

Are you guys putting these kittings in yourself or are you still going to a muffler shop?

I had to do a little cutting/welding to mate the magnaflow system up to my headman headers. Nothing to serious though?

I just put in a 2.5" Pypes S/S system in my car last month from Summit cost $350.00 $381.90 shipped to my door. Also got a set of Doug`s headers to go with the exhaust system. The headers are AWESOME I love em! I did have to go to my local muffler shop and have a couple 3 inch offsets made to connect to the collectors. The Sound is great the only thing I wasnt too crazy about was the location of the tailpipes they don`t quite line up with the spots under the valence but it`s not that bad especially for a kit. If you have the exhaust going through the valence you will probably be ok they make a kit for that style as well, but I believe Pypes etches their logo on the exhaust tips which is a turnoff for some folks. All in all I am very happy with the system from Pypes.

I would think all the kits out there will have to a certain degree some amount of cutting/fabrication to be done. Took me a weekend with the car on jackstands and welding all the joints if you have access to a lift it will make life a lot easier!

Agree. I love the way the Flowmasters sound on my 383 car. I believe I have 40 series on the car, but those were installed years before the car was in my possession. If you do a lot of highway driving you may not like listening to the exhaust the whole time :)

I bought a Magnaflow complete crossmember-back off Ebay for around $375. It was complete with all the hangers and fit well behnd the TTI headers on my 74 Challenger w/340-same setup as yours. I went with 2-1/2" for the small block.

Can't say for the other brands, but Magnaflow uses heavier tubing than I expected. It is substantially thicker than the "regular" exhaust tubing I have worked with. The system should last forever, and I get unsolicited comments on how good it sounds. I am a satisfied customer.

I wanted everything clamped, the instructions wanted some welding but I'm not set up to weld stainless.(I know you can weld stainless with regular mild steel stuff, but then the weld will rust). I got the extra stainless band-style clamps I needed from a heavy truck dealer, they had as small as 2.5", for around $6/each.

Edit-I see they are on Ebay now for $407-  http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Magnaflow-70-72-Dodge-Challenger-Dual-Exhaust-System-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trkparmsZalgoQ3dLVIQ26ituQ3dUCIQ26otnQ3d5Q26poQ3dLVIQ26psQ3d63Q26clkidQ3d9158145745967491106QQ_trksidZp5197Q2em7QQitemZ320678689116
