Will this steering coupler work?
« on: June 18, 2011 - 05:22:17 AM »
Hey all,

I picked up this 2nd hand steering coupler from ebay, it was meant to suit a Cuda with power steering however when it arrived it turned out to be a fair bit shorter.  The area with the actual splines appears to be the same length and in the same position so I dare say it will connect to the steering box ok. Where it is shorter ( approx 3/4 " ) is the shell(lack of a better word) that goes around the steering column. Will this be a problem?

Also, there is a pin missing from the new one. Can anyone tell me what this pin is for? I could probably put the pin from the old one into the new one if needed.

Thanks!

That pin keeps the coupler from coming off the shaft when assembled. If you get a rebuild kit that pin comes with it. It's cheap, like $15 I think? Weather it will work of not ( lenght ) I don't know? I would guess yes as the main shaft does pull out some.

The splines in the old coupler are badly worn. Luckily the guy doing the panel work noticed when he pulled the steering out to paint the engine bay. He thinks the wear was caused by someone not fitting it properly.
