Ok guys...need your help.
As long as I have had this car, it has idled rough etc..I know I have a big cam in it....but at some point I was able to find a nice middle ground as far as idle and performance, etc.
Now for the last few weeks I did notice that it was idling a LITTLE lower than usual.....so I got back into shifting into neutral at lights and all was well...no driveability issues aside from that.
Well, today it started out great and I was on her pretty hard going up a long hill to pass......got to the top and onto another road....no issues.......pulled over to use the phone...she was idling ok...then as I was on the phone (maybe 45 seconds of being stopped) she just stalled out.
Starts right back up and idle rose to about 1200 rpms, then slowly came down to below 500 and then died again.
Rinse and repeat.
I drove a bit more and then pulled over to tinker with it. I saw that when I would feather the throttle a bit, gas would come out the squirters as expected. I dont believe there is any gas dribbling out of them when it is sitting at idle, but it seemed like it took a whole for the squirting /dribbling to stop when you first reva nad let go of the throttle....which makes the idle go up and saty there for a short time before it drops down again...but saw nothing else out of place.
Well, decided to drive out to the show we were on our way to as-is and hope for the best...so about 30 miles. Most of it stop and go traffic...what a PITA. Had to constantly feather the gas and rev it to above 1100 rpms to get her to not stall out....
The car sat for about 90 minutes at the show and then we left...same stuff again in local traffic. So we came home an all-highway route. Couldnt have run better on the highway. Good power and such.
Got back around home and same crap.....pulled into my garage and she idled low, around 400 rpms for a good 45 seconds or 1 minute and then acted like she was gonna die again so I goosed it once, let it die down some and then shut it down.
Now...Back on 6/12 I installed ref #10 in the edelbrock tuner guide for the 1405 carb I have....and it ran great, including idle, or at least as good as it always had idle wise. But for the last month or so (even before that mod) I have noticed it did want to idle a smidge lower, like I said.
Does this sound like it is leaning itself out at idle? My wife was in her car behind us the whole way and said she saw NO smoke at all.
I am thinking maybe idle air bleeds or fuel passages for the idle circuit? It was such a sudden onset of the issue I am thinking dirt somewhere but I have a decent fuel filter in place....when I had the top of the carb off on the 12th the bowls were clean.
Whats the best way to clean those passages? Do I need to pull the carb apart and soak it/blow air through it?
Or is there a faster easier way?
I hate to go pulling the thing apart less than 2 weeks before Carlisle.....
Any thoughts? Thanks in advance yunz guys.
