Try looking to see if your wiring connections are grounded. I had the same problem with my Cuda and my mechanic told me who ever did my wiring didn't ground properly. MY gauges worked but I had no lights in the dash at night so my dimmer switch wouldn't work because the lights must work for the dimmer to work.

Good luck and I hope this helps

My frined Gian had the same problem. It turned out to be  aground. I will ask him today what he forund. Check the ground to your ignition box. Check your ground wire to your cluster.
Troubleshoot-
What was the last part/parts replaced/removed prior to painting. My friend tells me that its as simple as celaning off/removing the paint and putting red axle grease on the ground.

Hi everyone,
I am new to this site. I have a 1973 Dodge Challenger. The dash dimmer switch is no good and I can not find one. I do not know how to fix the problem. The car was rewired by someone else and does not have the original colored wires. I am at a loss as to what to do. I also need the bulbs there are 3 kinds do not know which ones they are. Hope someone can help?

Thanks, Robby

Welcome Robby,  We are fortunate to have a forum member, Slotts, that restores dash dimmer switches and other switches components , these are not available new and anything used may be in no better shape than what you have. Check the following link

In the mean time you can fashion a jumper using a mini-fuse to bypass the switch &  power your instrument lamps. BTW the light bar must be grounded to the dash frame to work.
You say the car was re-wired, did they use a stock harness and just splice or was it a complete re-wire?
Here are some basic wiring diagrams but without the colors to go by you just have to trace with a meter.

Bulbs can be looked up on-line at most any parts store.
