Can oil leak from here??
« on: June 16, 2011 - 08:04:14 PM »
So I notice a small spot on the garage floor today when I moved the car outside.  Definitely is oil so I crawled under to have a look.  It appears that the oil seems to be at the front passenger corner of the engine .  Not sure yet but can oil come from around the bolt in the picture as that is where it looks like it is coming?  If yes is the answer . . . how do I fix please?  Teflon?  O-ring?  Other thoughts?

I must say that leaking fluids is one thing I do not want my cars to do.  Messy, leaves spots at friends driveways, attracts dirt . . . just not a good thing.

What I have found is any bolt hole where the threads are not blind, such that the hole goes straight into the crankcase or waterjacket....they can leak oil or water.   So as you suggested I wrap the bolt threads with Teflon tape or two lines of blue locktite; install in cleaned hole/threads of course.  Start the tape one thread below the end of the bolt so tape isn't "cut off" as you thread the bolt in...keeps tape fragments from being injested by the oil pump and deposited where-ever.

due to poor internet I cannot see the pic , most bolts are blind , I am trying to guess what bolt in the fron corner of the engine is not , the fuel pump bolts are not blind . try using teflon & see if the leak stops .

Do you have an aftermarket block?  It kind of looks like a 4-bolt main set-up.  If it is it needs to be torqued to spec when reinstalled, if it isn't a 4bolt set-up then I've had good luck with teflon paste.

He is exactly right . . it is a 4 bolt main block and I have discovered that indeed oil can leak from that bolt.  It seems everytime I look at that bolt, there is oil there.  I was told to remove it and apply some silicone.  It has a washer that is suppose to stop the oil but doesn't seem to be working properly.     :pullinghair:

45 foot pounds of torque is required . . .

now that I have a decent internet connection & can see the pic I agree the cross bolt can leak , teflon will not help as the threads are deep in the block , silicone should seal it
