Steering column re-instal question (with pic)
« on: June 02, 2011 - 03:51:07 PM »
Hey guys,

Im trying to put a new roll pin back into the steering column coupler but I cant get it to slide the last couple centimeters onto the second set of grooves. Am I missing some trick here?

I think there is a master spline that has to align.

Awesome, thanks! I noticed that mark on the box side but I didnt see it on the column side. Ill pull it out and put a mark where it is. Hopefully I didn't do any damage  :o

If you have the splines right, your picture shows the coupler is not pushed in deep enough

:iagree: Not deep enough yet. Remember the column is collapsible.  :grinyes:

Bit of the old clean and grease wouldn't come amiss either.  :2cents:

Ok I cleaned the splines, marked the alignment spline, and still can't get it to go on.
In a furious rage, I decided to rip apart the entire column again.

How does the coupler come off, and does anything look wrong in this picture?

^How does that gear took thing for the steering wheel lock come off (assuming it does), and is it in the right place or should it be against that snap ring (which would solve my problem...I think)?

Does this backing plate come off? On my 68 charger there's a notch where it can slide over that bump on the column. I dont know if this would help me but Im curious.

To remove the coupler, there is a little pin that prevent the coupler from coming all the way off. you need to press it outward so it sticks out from the coupler instead of in. Kind of tough to describe but if you stick your finger into the coupler, you will feel it on one side.

Before removing the coupler make sure you know where the master spline is at , there is a small hole drilled in the lower part of the shaft , it is on the same side as the master spline , if you get it 180* out the coupler will go on but the steering wheel will be upside down while the wheels straight

Got it, thanks for all the help guys.
I took it all the way apart and cleaned it. I test fitted just the coupler and it slide on fine so then I checked the shaft and found that it was collapsed, thus why it wasn't sliding all the way down.   :banghead:
Some penetrating oil and aggressive pulling solved that problem. Now for the rest of the electrical gremlins!
