Dimmer wiring question
« on: July 05, 2011 - 04:51:39 PM »
There is a tan wire on the dash dimmer plug running from the center spade to the fuse box labeled instruments. It has a 5 amp fuse. running out the other side of the fuse is the orange wire for the dash lights. the fuse is not connected to either of the buss bars.
Is this just a in line fuse between the dimmer switch and the dash lights ?  I have to assume the power for the dash lights runs through the parking light  switch circuit (the pink wire). Is this correct ? I'm rewiring the under dash and am trying to figure out if I need the in line fuse

I think that the orange wire splits off and gets thru the ignition switch also, according to my wiring diagram,,hopefully some one else will respond if I  am right, there are some wiring diagrams here

I can only confirm the power for parking lights does run thru the pink wire.

If the dimmer switch is faulty, the dash lights won't work though.

I don't have a wiring diagram here but I believe the power comes from the headlight switch which turns the power on back to the fuses block throught 5 amp fuse & back up to the dash light dimmer switch .

Just worked on my dimmer circuit last week.  The 5 amp fuse comes right from the dimmer switch like in your diagram. You should leave that fuse in for your instrument lights because your running lights have a 20 amp fuse. If your panel lights short out, you lose dash lights but won't lose your tailights for driving home. You gotta trust the guys that put a little thought into the whole fuse thing.
