Close call
« on: July 28, 2011 - 05:25:12 PM »
We're off to Cananada on Saturday morning so I decided to throw the driver seat and brakelights into the Cuda to take it for one last spin before we're gone for two weeks. I think I'm a pretty cautious driver and tend to spend alot of time with my eyes on the rear view when I'm stopped on the road for any reason. It paid off today.
The car 6 in front of me stopped for whatever reason and so did all the cars behind him without a problem. I stopped a good car length and a half behind the car in front of me and started watching my rear view. The car behind me doesn't seem to be slowing down so I start looking for somewhere get the car out of the way. I finally decide to cut across the oncoming lane which was empty and pull into the parking lot for a pet supply place. The tires spin and then bite and I get out of the way at about the same time that the lady who was behind me slams into the car that was in front of me and sets off a chain reaction of 4 or 5 cars hitting the car in front of him.
It was no million dollar boo boo like in Monte Carlo, but it probably crept into the 20 or 30 thousand dollar range.
The lady that caused the accident got out of her car, hung up her phone after the shock wore off. Nobody was seriously hurt, but I'm sure there are going to be a few sore necks tomorrow.

I had almost the same thing happen when I was still up in Canada and driving a 91 Sonoma. The guy behind me had his brake lines blow out and my truck didn't get clear in time. I did manage to point it out of the lane so that when I got hit my truck launched past the guy in the brand new pick up in front of me and left skid marks 20 feet or so from the point of impact. New truck guy didn't even bother to pull over to see if I was ok, even though the box of my truck was mashed into the cab.

Wow that was lucky, pays to be aware of your surroundings.
I always tell my son as he's starting to drive, "I don't worry about you, it's all the others on the road"

I tend to be pretty paranoid when I'm driving. I'm always watching mirrors because I just assume that everybody on the road is either drunk, stupid or on the phone. When I'm in the Cuda I tend to be even more paranoid because I know it takes a little longer to stop and the rear end likes to get squirrely if I hit the breaks too hard. I also know that the tires are going to spin if I have to move from a dead stop. I know that one from lots of testing.
Puerto Rican drivers don't seem to be all that good in the first place. They like to drive with high beams on, turn signals are rarely used, and if you see a car with all the lights working then it probably just got shipped here.

Good eye! You probably did as much to save your Cuda from "beyond" as some of us are doing saving our project cars, (not to mention your own hide) and all you had to do was hit the gas!  I'm glad all went well! :2thumbs:  :clapping:

3 weeks ago I wasn't as quick as you.  I was stopped to make a left, when a woman blacked out and plowed into the back of my Jeep.  I saw her and had just enough time to think, "That car isn't going to stop...." BAM!

Thank heavens I wasn't in the Challenger.

WOW as in what coincidence, let me explain :angelwings:
Yesterday I went to pick up some parts for the Dart and on the way back I had to stop due to some bridge work and I was watching for the car coming up from behind. It was a young woman in an suv which got my attention because as she came up she was over the yellow lines by about a foot.I trust no one on the road,so I kept watching and as we continued on she would swerve here and there.I was passing by a Ford dealership that has a really sweet 2011 Mustang C/S vert up by the showroom(sorry)and glanced over and saw the car, smiled and looked up in the mirror to see that suv swerve into an oncoming pickup and watched both vehicles slam the cars at the dealerships front row like dominos.
Glad to hear you and your car are ok and I am with you on the fact that I might be a little paronoid also but its time that they make it so if a car is moving that the cell phone won't work :2cents:
