440 6 barrel distributor suggestions for 71 cuda
« on: August 13, 2011 - 07:48:08 AM »
Hi guys,

Bought this 71 cuda with a 440-6 and the distributor is a Tri-Power distributor from performance distributors.
Don't know much about distributors but seems like they are the GM time (HEI), the mechanic that I showed it to found it very strange to have a GM type dist in a Mopar. He suggests to swap it for a real mopar dist.
I have had the carbs rebuilt , which fixed my idling rpm back to about 900 (was 2500) but hot idle is still high (2000) + engine is dieseling when hot + some small backfires from exhaust when accelerating. I still have to check some things on the carbs as suggested on this site but I'd like to get your advise on an affordable distributor.
Wiring is way different then a mopar dist, I don't even think there's a resistance on it.
Cam is a 270H if that makes a difference.
And the car is to be used as a strong street car.
Thanks

Mancini will sell you the Mopar electronic kit & replace the orange box with the better Chrome unit , the dist has fully adjustable mechanical & vacuum advance  .

You mean this kit?

I like the price.
I don't think I need an MSD distributor at 300$ for a strong street car (440hp estimated). Do you agree?
What are your 2 cents on this tri-power distributor?
What is the orange box you speak of?
Thanks
