The dash frame, glovebox door and ashtray door are a suede paint.  The inner part of the assembly is gloss black.(the part that houses the cigarette lighter)  The tray itself is plated silver zinc.

Thanks much, mine had faded to sort of a flat blck so I was not sure of its original state. the previous owner of my cuda was a heavy smoker so the bottom of my tray is some what corroded. Would a flat silver mimic close enough to the original color?

Bead blast the inside of the ashtray and then rub it with 0000 steel wool.  That will take away the blasted finish and leave a somewhat shiny metal finish.  You could just mist a clear coat over it but it may start rusting again.  It just depends on the climate.

If you havn't heard about it, there is a company called ECS and they make a product for preserving bare metal componants.  It's called RPM and it's a paste.  You heat the part you want to coat up to 120 degrees, then rub on the RPM.  It turns to a liquid and seals the part.  Once it's dry, it is invisable.  That would be the perfect product to use on the ash tray.

You can also send the tray in to be replated.  It won't hide the pits on the inside but it will keep them from rusting again and the outside will look like new.  You can use the RPM over the plating too if you want.

Thanks for the ideas, is a good replater that you recommend?

Just Google Zinc Plating  and look for shops in your area.  I had a bunch of fasteners zinc plated at Key City Plating in Dubuque Iowa.  They had a minimum charge for barrel plating which was $40.  They just dump all the fasteners in a barrel.  They are all plated at the same time in the solution.  Larger parts need to be done separately but the ashtry maybe small enough to do with all the other fasteners.  I had the spare tire wing nuts, coil bracket and heater hose bracket all barrel plated with the rest of the fasteners.  It was only $40 total.

Thanks I found a place locally, its has been at least a decade since I have done any blasting. What is the media of choice now and do you have a website for ECS? I completely took the assembly apart so I will to have to rivet  the  ashtray itself from the door, I notoce that there was some corrosion underneath the tray itself.

I use glass beads in my blast cabinet.  It does a good job with corroded fasteners and light to medium rusted surfaces.  It doesn't do a good job on heavily rusted parts.  I also have a 25 lbs container of aluminum oxide and a 50 lbs container of black sand.  I havn't used those yet.  When I blast the exhaust manifolds, I'll change to the more agressive media.
