    I've just finished removing the old decal from my console's top plate with lighter fluid and a razor blade.  Now that all I have left is 30 some year old dried glue, that lighter fluid barely softens, does anyone have a miracle chemical that will get it off without damaging the chrome ?  I was thinking of trying paint remover gel, the aircraft heavy duty stuff, but am afraid if I get any on the chrome it'll be a problem.

    Its called GOO GONE.  Available at the local hardware or department store!!  Couple bucks! I don't believe it will hurt the chrome but check the back of the bottle!    :thumbs:

    I used Windex. Lots, and lots of Windex. What a pain in the arse. :madvibe: There is no easy way. Gives you a great opportunity to make up swear words though. :gripe: :gripe: :gripe:

    Goo Gone is pretty much lighter fluid, and windex will make me swear way too much  ;D  I'm gonna give the paint stripper a go, very carefully.  I'll report back with the results.

    I think GOO GONE is citrus based.  Works pretty good when I've used it!  :grinyes:

    OK,

    I was careful when I brushed the stripper on, wiped off any I got on the chrome, mostly.  Let it set 5 - 10 min. and scraped it off. Went real easy.  Then rinsed real, real good with hot water and dried.  Where it had been on the chrome looked fine, didn't seem to hurt it any, still I'd be careful not to get any on it.  A little more clean up and the new decal will be ready to put on.

    Laquer thinner or paint stripper both work and niether should hurt the chrome.

    I'll probably wait till tomorrow to put the decal on, need to find my small roller to get the edges down good.

    Got it finished.  A couple of observations:

    1.  Replace the decal soon after purchasing it.  I bought mine aprox. 1 year ago and it shrank a small amount, making for a gap around the edge I'd rather not have had.  Still acceptable.

    2.  Start the decal toward the center of the plate, where the shifter cutout is.  Makes it a lot easier to get the alignment right.

    Yep,  I know what it's worth, also know that I wasn't willing to pay that much.  I got lucky and found a complete console at a local swap meet where there were only Ferd and Chebbie parts.  A hundred bucks sound good ?
