Alternator / Electrical Problem ?
« on: July 27, 2011 - 07:03:36 AM »
OK ... my last electrical problem ended up being a bad alternator was only putting out 40amps and i had a pioneer stereo with sub ...

Ended up getting a new alternator with 80amps...

In the process i also got a new voltage regulator...

NOW the problem seems to be that the Alternator is putting out too many volts... when i hit the breaks the lights (headlights, dash lights, fuel gauge light) dim but then i hit the gas the lights go SUPER bright ... the stereo even cuts out when the lights are really bright... the lights then start going a bit crazy ... its like a flickering sequence when i start driving after ive been stopped: normal, bright, brightest, dim, normal bright , stereo cuts out, brightest, normal ... then when i start to drive for awhile without having to brake, everything evens out and all is well... but as soon as i stop, the lights dim... then hit the gas the problem happens again

not sure what i should do ... the battery is also grounded.

any thoughts ?

Bad regulator , is it internally or externally regulated ?
with 80 amp output I would install a bypass 10 guage wire fromthe alt output to the battery connection on the start relay

and with 80 amps please make sure that you take CP's advice and add the starter relay bypass!!
The old original wiring harness has very well known weak spots in it, including the ammeter in the gauge panel, the firewall connectors, etc.
You do not want melted wires, or worse. Please search the electrical section for the suggested upgrades. They are not hard or expensive to do.

rather than post a bunch of links, you should go to the electrical section and search for "alternator starter relay bypass"
The search function doesnt work as well anymore since they "upgraded" it, and its much harder to use than it used to be, but there is lots of good information on this site. I also noticed that some great links, like allpar articles etc, and all the good old pictures, are gone, and thats a shame, but you should find plenty to assist you in doing it. Its basically one 8 to 10 gauge wire running from your alternator straight across to the starter relay near the battery, with a 60 to 80 amp fuse on the starter relay end.
