70 Auto console shift button popped out
« on: September 04, 2011 - 10:55:44 PM »
All, as I was leaving a car show, I pressed the shifter button to reverse and the button popped out.  What the heck keeps it down?  Had to take the spring out so I could still shift it.  Is it the set screw that keeps it in?
or is it broken?
Thanks for the help.

Isn't it threaded onto the end of the cable?

I think the spring just screws in.

The button itself is threaded and I believe it's keyed to the outer knob. To install, spin the whole enchilada with the set-screw loose, then when you're to "depth", tighten the screw. The threads might have stripped since the button is only plastic and it's 40 years old.

And, in that case, you can contact Mr. Q and see if he has an Auto-Grip handle for the '70 because it is the best solution :wavingflag:

I installed a helicoil into the plastic knob on one shfiter button but it ripped out the helicoil , you can try to helicoil the button , I would use some JB weld behind the helicoil if you try that . Steve is correct it is keyed to the outer knob & they both thread down together but do not thread it on too far or the button will not depress far enough to clear the detents
Steves [Quapman] shifter is by far the best option , it is all steel & you will not have any issues with it & it installs in seconds , I have put those shifters in a few cars now & my customers love them
