Power Steering ?
« on: July 16, 2011 - 08:14:36 PM »
On the way home today I thought I smelled smoke but figured it was exhaust fumes . Go to my brothers to drop him off and smoke was coming out from hood . Upon opening it there was power steering fluid on  the inside fender wall and the headers as well as the master cylinder . Cleaned everything up but could not find any leaks . Got to my house and everything was wet again . Cleaned everything again filled everything again , reved engine , worked steering wheel , no leakes . Where is my leak coming from . Not hoses or seals .I know one of you have gone though this if you could help me out I would be greatful . Thanks .

Had a similar experience with a Dakota P/U... only leaked bad when I turned the wheel,  High pressure hose fixed it

Hose new about a year ago , which I know doesn't mean anything . I did work the steering wheel while car was sitting and nothing . I'm wondering if there is a valve someplace sticking sometimes forcing it out the cap although the pump it self does not look rel wet just lightly . :clueless:

Have someone rev. it up & turn the wheel while you look.   There is a seal under the valve where hoses attach.

Update :

Problem still there . I'm narrowing it down though .

First : only happens after 15 or 20 miles of driving .

Second : When it happened today (all at once smoke coming out of back) I pulled over and pump fill neck was wet .

Third : Got home cleaned things up , let car cool , no leak '

Here is what I notice under hood after 3 drinks steering trying to figure it out . One of the header tubes is touching the gear box .

Question what is the odds that the fulid is boiling over and out of the cap after 15 or 20 miles . And why now all of a sudden ? Motor not running any hotter that I can tell . Will denting  :screwy: the pipe be the anwser ?

Feed back please . Ever happen to anyone you know of ? Getting sick of keep cleaning when I want to be driving . THANKS  :worshippy :worshippy

I installed a cooler for the steering fluid as my steering box is VERY close to the header too. The pump would get quite hot after a drive. The cooler did drop the temp quite a bit. I can't say for sure that's your problem as I installed mine before I started driving it.

A member on here set me up with it. I think he said it's off of a later model Sebring?
A small tranny cooler would work just as well too.
