Hmmm... I pulled my pan off and posted pix to confirm what crank was in there.  Turned out to be cast, Requiring a special balancer.   I ended up swapping the engine to a nice 360 out of a truck for 300 bucks.And a factory flywheel... It was out of complete frustration.  And it's still there.  I'm about to replace the rear housing/axels in a last ditch effort.  But there was/is more than one thing going on with mine. I havn't been around much because I'm pretty bummed out about it. (lurking)  Your troubles sound kinduv' similar.   I've tried everything!!!     
What year 340 is it?    if it's a 73 you might want to pull the pan. Confirm the crank.  I feel your pain!  Good luck,Don't give up. And keep us posted.     Best 300 bucks I've ever spent...

The casting date on the side of the block is 1969...so the crank should be forged.  Like I mentioned earlier, I don't trust the guy who put it together so anything could be inside...

I'm leaning toward pulling the engine this winter to find out what is really inside, and make sure it is put together right.  Now...to find that illusive money tree  :money:
