Deep pan filter extension question
« on: August 29, 2011 - 07:58:47 PM »
Car had a chrome pan on it which leaked like most chrome pans do-in my experience.   I ordered a Mopar sheet metal deep pan and filter extension kit.

Seems the chrome pan was a deep pan and I could have saved some money if I had realized that and spend some time making it seal, but....

Anyway, the current extension is one of the sheet metal type with a gasket between it and the valve body and a paper thin gasket between it and the filter.

The new extension is an aluminum billet that has an o-ring with it that appears to go in the recess of the extension and seems to go to the valve body side.

Now, in the new kit, there is a round plastic washer with three ears equally spaced around it as well as the o-ring.  I don't see a place for it to go.  It is hard plastic on both sides but it does not seem to fit in either the filter, or the billet block.

The easy way is to just reuse the old extension and not worry about it, but inquiring minds like to know things.  :)

It is probably irrelevant as there was plenty of brass shavings in the pan so I guess I will have bigger fish to worry about when I get to that point, but, right now I just want to get the pan back on it.   Want to be sure there is no air leak to speed up the demise.

The filter that was on it was one of the early style brass screens with two pump pick up holes but I think that was okay..new one is a dacron looking single hole filter.

Pretty sure that's the washer for the drain plug

It was in the baggy with the extension and associated hardware.  there is a sealing washer on the plug so I would not think that is what it is...the three ears on the outer edge throw me :)

Now I'm curious, looks like the washer I used on the drain plug, but it's in the extension kit?

It is for the drain plug. All deep Mopar pans have a drain plug.

Yeah, I could not find that good a picture online.  Was going to take a pic this morning.   Strange, it has a gasket on the plug that came with the pan, but, I will use that one-was going to try it for fit this morning...my mind said it was too large a hole, but, I had not tried it yet...

Thanks, guys :)

ETA: all I need, besides a rebuilt tranny, is a pair of eyes that are 30 years younger.  The old pan did not have a sealing gasket on the drain plug...I was looking at the flange on the bolt head and thinking it matched the new one and that that was the seal...I guess that explains why the old one seemed to take a lot of torque to stop it from dripping.  Anyway, back together for the moment thanks to you guys.
