340 stroker kits
« on: August 20, 2011 - 08:37:23 PM »
Since the cruising season is almost over, I am going to have my 71 340 rebuilt and after reading some posts on here I've decided to stroke it. It's a 71 motor that's already .40 over. What I'm looking for is the best stroker kits that are available out there. thanks.

I think the fully balanced kits that Mancini racing sells looks good, Callies forged crank, forged diamond pistons, H-beam rods.

I went with a forged Scat kit on the reccomendation of my engine builder. I think Hughes Engines carries & sells them.

Iread a bunch of threads here first. Search enginee builders or stroker kit on the site, and you should find some good info.

hard to beat  BPE - i got his 4.125 forged crank, 6.2 compstar rods and matching forged pistons for a great price, it was a no brainer when i was shopping around.

It's a 71 motor that's already .40 over.

Not the best starting point for a stroker motor, or any rebuild for that matter. Get it sonic checked before buying any parts. Unless it checks out exceptionally thick (not something 340s are known for... quite the opposite actually) and/or cleans up with nothing more than honing, you'll probably want to start with a standard bore block. And if you go hunting for a block, STD 360s are far less expensive than 340s. Sleeving is another option, but that gets expensive quick.

Need to decide how fast you want to go. Generally consensus is that cast cranks and I-beam rods are fine up to 500 hp or better (assuming quality machine work, balancing and assembly).

Exception would be Eagle cast cranks. Lot's of documented issues.

CNC Motorsports has good deals on stroker kits. Unless you're building it yourself, consult with your machine shop.

BPE = Bloomer Performance Engineering............get a hold of him (easy on Moparts).....check out his products and pricing and you'll be hard pressed to beat it. Actually a thread there (and  for A bodies only) on a 430" build using his rotating components.
