Switch Panel Decal
« on: January 04, 2005 - 08:21:05 PM »
OK,

Did a decal replacement on a 3 switch cluster.  Tools needed:  Exacto knife or razor blade, Heat Gun, patience.  I had 2 of 3, guess which I was missing  ;)

This was a test run with a spare cluster, first I removed the screws holding the switches and removed them.  Next I VERY carefully straightened the tabs that held the plate on and removed the plate.  With the plate off, I straightened the tabs for easy assembly.  Cleaned the woodgrain on the plate with windex and dried.  I started to apply the decal at the three holes, lining them up carefully.  Smoothed the decal from the holes out to the edges lightly, so I could make small adjustments as needed. Pay a lot of attention to the inside curve, it's fun getting that stretched later if it doesn't  fit well.  Pressed firmly with my fingers over the labels and used my fingernail to get a good outline for trimming.  Don't over do the nail thing like I did and leave a small mark in the decal I'll have to "relax" out with the heat gun. CAREFULLY cut around the  labels and peeled the decal off.  Take your time here and use reading glasses if your old like me.  Once they are cut out, smooth the decal down firmly and touch up any scratches in the black.  If you take about twice as long as I did, you can do a real classy job.  As it is, this one is way better than you need for a nice driver.  You'd have to look real close around the labels to tell it's not original.

First pic is of the original plate and the decal, just making sure the spacing of the holes was good.
Second pic is of the decal on with one label cut out.
Third Pic is with all 3 labels cut out.
Fourth pic is of the plate fitted back on the plastic panel.

Rev,

I have a little work to do on the inside curve with the heat gun, but I'm sure it won't take much.  You can do it !

PG,

Finished product looks great, is it going in car?  Reason I ask is I did exactly same proceedure to mine about a year ago.  It is starting to lift in a couple of places.  I started another thread asking if anyone has seen this and it appears to be common problem.

I'm starting to think the adhesive used on these decals just isn't good enough to hold up over time.

FYI, I bought mine from Legendary probably 3 years ago.

LMAO - that's  good one!
Looks very good, but you should have done this like a year ago and would have helped me out.
I keep looking in all my boxes and still looking for the 3rd item on your list.
