Sluggish 3 spd Wiper Motor, makes a buzzing noise when on ..
« on: September 09, 2011 - 11:08:15 AM »
new problem ....

This all started this week.   we have had some cool weather and the wiper motor started acting funny.  In Hot weather noise never happened.

here is the issue:
When the wiper is turned on, regardless of speed or wetness of the windshield, the motor makes a buzz or humm.  Plus it seems to be lazy.  The functions work okay, it parks etc.

One time when I turned the swith they moved a little and just stopped.  Then a couple seconds later, the started to work.

Any ideas?

I looked at the ground strap, seems okay.  I also retightned the nuts holding it to the cowl.

Any help is always appreciated...

Bill

Check the wires coming from the cylinder to the housing....the sleeves deteriorate over time and can cause hit and miss "shorts" when the bare wires touch the housing or each other.  The "hum" you describe is usually a "dead short" intermittently

thanks --  will check the pigtails etc....

The noise sounds like a gear or something is slipping ......
It is not an electrical short kind of hum.

Without looking inside the gearbox to see if the gear is broken, teeth chewed or the latch has swung around and is hitting the block or one of the landings, or has managed to make contact with the copper tang on the back of the switch plate, I'm not sure.   Usually noises coming from a motor are from the gearbox, scenarios above, or brush cap area where brushes can break or the fiber side of the brush cap can break from a brush that's too short and gets wanked and breaks the fiber side of the brush cap...haven't seen that as often as I have the gear latch catching an island or block in the gear housing.

any chance you rebuild/service the motors?

Somewhere in its past life (durring the resto) the motor was nicely restored.
Plating is very nice, wire look brand new, correct date and pt#,  etc....

I be happy to ship it to you -
let me know
