Any compressor recomendations?

I know I got the wheels turning for alot of you here, but Its NOT for air tools/painting ect. Let me explain- We've got a waste oil furnace in the shop that we've run for a good 8-9-10 years already. But if you have one of these you know you need air pressure to feed it oil. Just your run of the mill 110-120V plugs into a regular outlet unit. The one we've been using I bought years ago when I didn't even have the waste oil furnace. I didnt even need it at the time but it was a great deal so I bought it. It lived its first 3-4 years at my buddys place, cause I didnt need it.  Then I got the waste oil furnace and took my compressor back (all good).  In the winter this thing cycles on and off every day (dec-march minimum). I've replaced the pressure switch 3 times already. No BIG deal. BUT now the tank has rotted thru... I welded it up and its holding, but I'm leary.... I'd hate walking into the shop early on a January morning and the inside / outside temp is the same!  The current one was made in USA ands has given me a ton of good service...........

Time for a new one.  Do u have a dryer on the compressor?? Drain compressor tank weekly!!

 air compressor= condensation, waste oil = acids
  acid + water on bottom of tank holes.
Should have copper or steel lines, if rubber  hoses,  turn soft , swell internal restricting flow of waste oil. Cause pressure on system.

Yes we do have a dryer & yes its drained often.  All copper going up to the furnace. Yes ol' BIGS does remember a few things but like ol' BIGS thigs get old!

How big do you need?

I have a Dewalt framing compressor that I use for just about everything. It's 110/220 on a toggle switch, quiet enough that you can stand next to it and have a conversation without having to raise your voice, and makes enough CFM that it was running 2 air nailers and a stapler without having to wait for it to rebuild pressure. It's also got the valve so it stays running and the pump just kicks in when it's needed.

Sorry I havent been specific enough.  BIGS u dumazz. What weve been using is approx 15/20gal tank/electric motor 110-120v/plus in/horizontal tank  on wheels. This is maybe 12-15 tears old by now, I dont know cfm.  I doubt a framing unit would keep up w demand. On a full burn (coldazz winter day) my furnace will burn about 2 gallons an hour. I think now they're all screw type (?) Addimttedly I havent compressor shopped since the early/mid 90's I didnt need too.

My first compressor was an Sears 5hp 30 gallon (regular oiled crankcase type) and I abused that thing for 15 yrs and couldn`t kill it.I used to run it long and gard using auto body tools and overheat it and instead of waiting for it to cool down I`d  keep hitting the reset till it fired up again.I finally sold it and bought a Sears 6 hp 60 gallon oiless which was loud and needed rebiulding all the time.Not sure how the quality is nowadays but the little 5 hp was great but DON`T buy the pos oiless type!

Jeff, I agree with the oil less type for sure. I really cant kill this one either  (head wise that is) (cranckcase type) but now that I've started welding on the tank time is limited.

Have you thought about just replacing the tank? One of the guys I used to work for had a 2 or 300 lb propane tank that he'd hooked up instead of using the little 5 or 10 gallon tank that came with the compressor. You could probably find an expired tank for pretty cheap

Never thought of that. Around here you can but heads (crankcase type) lots of places. Hmmmm

Biggs, as far as capacity you could use a hand pump if you were not using that hand for something else.  If you burn 2 gallons an hour that would be less than one third cubic foot. Most compressors, even a small one will pump 4 to 10 cfm PER MINUTE!.  PK
