833 OD bearing retainer
« on: January 07, 2005 - 01:25:40 PM »
I have an 833 OD that I was going to use on a 440. Removed the 5.1" retainer and got a new bearing retainer for the 440 bellhousing (4.8"). Times have changed, 440 is gone and now want to mate t he 833 OD to a small block 10.5" bellhousing. I printed out a good article on the web that lists a Mopar part P4529659 as a replacement retainer for the OD to fit a 4.3".

Called the local Mopar parts guy, he says the P4529659 is not a valid part #.

Has Ma Mopar gotten rid of that bearing retainer, or do I have the numbers mixed up? Any advice?....would rather not cut on the bellhousing if I can get away with it.

Thanks

the OD tranny uses the large front brg so you cannot use the 4.35" diameter retainer on the OD tranny , you will need to get a belhousing with either the 4.80 or the 5.10 belhousing or you could have the bellhousing machined out to either of the above diamentions
Passon Performance will have any part you need for a manual tranny http://www.passonperformance.com/
I have ordered brg retainers from Mopar & waited over 6 months , they say the #s are still valid but no parts exist , they don`t seem to be interested in supplying the parts passon does hae them though

Thanks Chryco... :worship:

Talked to Brewers, according to them, the OD tranny has a 4.16 bolt circle, so,  there are no bearing retainers possible for the 4.3" bell opening. So it's either machine the bell to 4.805 to accept the BB retainer currently on the 833 OD, or, scrap the OD idea and look for a regular 833. Clearly the least expensive route is to machine the bellhousing. Figure I need to exhaust the "regular" 833 option before I go down that road.

Appreciate your input, thanks :patriot:

I would use the OD , if you can find a 78-88 truck with the 318 & od 833 the bell will bolt into your car

Ok, let me see if I understand this.

(1) If I find a 78-88 318 truck bellhousing (that came with an OD), then I would need to revert back to the 5.1 retainer on my OD that currently has a 4.8 retainer?

(2) Is that 78-88 bellhousing an 11" or 10.5"?  (assuming that it is an 11"...)

(3) I have a 1974 truck 360 engine with a flywheel. The flywheel has just been surfaced and ready to go. Will that 11" 1974 truck 360 flywheel that I have, work with a 78-88 truck bellhousing and my new Mopar shortblock (balanced pre-92)?

(4) Should I just scrap everything and go with a small block Chevy where I wont have all this interchange issues?

Thanks

1] yes
2]the truck bell is a 10.95 / 10.5 setup so tkae the flywheel
3] nothe 360 truck flywheel with the A435 tranny will not work
4] if you do this I will be dropping by  :spank:

So, run the 78-88 bellhousing, shift back to 5.1" retainer, use the Mopar recommended 10.5" externally balanced flywheel on the new Mopar shortblock......and quit asking so many stupid questions...is that correct? :dogpile:

So.......where do I get this elusive 78-88 bellhousing? Casting numbers to give to my used parts guy?

Thanks ;D

Thanks...I'll start researching 78-88 truck bellhousings that came with 833 OD tranny's with 5.1 openings.

E-bay doesnt have any (they're probably all up in Canada)....if this doesnt work, I swear, later this year you'll see pics of a Challenger with a Small block chevy and a M-22 rock crusher :banghead:

Thanks much

would you want to bolt a built 454 up to a turbo 350 from a 250 ? but I guess the 454 only has 200hp so it wont be so bad  :grinyes:
