383 street engine build

 :working: Hello out there;  starting the planning process before I send my 383 out to the machine shop. Want to know if anyone out there has a good combination for a streetable engine with great torque numbers? Thanks in advance.

 l :working:  I am on a tight budget but I am guesstimating around $4,500. I know that it will have to be iron headed and I would like to have a 6pac it will be backed by a 727. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you. :bigsmile:

I just did a all stock 383 with the only mod being a stroker kit from 440 source.   Stock heads, stock carb, stock intake, stock exhaust and it dyno'd at 400.2 HP and 468.8 torque.   The kit and machine work was more than you're budget.  Also kept the 112 degree grind on the cam so I have plenty of vacuum for the power brakes too!  I'm guessing with a bigger carb and headers the stroker kit would make a lot more power.

Not 100% sure, but the stroker kit is around $2k and I think I'm nearly $7K in to the motor.

I went with the 438 kit.  Machine work was pretty standard stuff. 

Do you plan on doing the work yourself or having a machine shop do it?

Had mine done with .040 KB400 pistons, Comp Cams 275/DEH, Holley 3310. 1 3/4 Hedmans. Had my 346's redone and shaved .030 for $4500. Then added Stealths for 900 more. Just below 10 to 1 compression and around 400 horse. I'm happy! :burnout:

I'm planning a sixpack 383 (or 400) build myself.  I've already got the sixpack setup, but since you don't and if money is an issue, build the best motor you can especially the short block and then update with a sixpack and maybe better heads later on.  Back when I ran mine in the 70's, I used several intake/carb setups and a good dual plane like the Ede RPM (DP4B back then) and decent carb would run very strong and not cost nearly as much as a complete sixpack setup.  Good luck.
