Can't get my cam out
« on: November 21, 2011 - 10:11:00 AM »
I am trying to pull the cam out of my "freshly rebuilt engine". It spins freely but when I try to pull it out I get about it about 1 inch out and then clunk it seems to be hitting metal. It pushes back in fairly easily. I have removed the intake and everything seems fine inside the block.

Any ideas?     :banghead:

Old cams can be difficult to remove due to deposit (gum, crud, carbon, wear pattern, etc) but a new cam should slide right out.  Must be a burr on one of the oil holes or similar problem. Try rotating as you pull outward. Sorry, I don't have much else to offer.  PK

Camshaft has to be aligned EXACTLY with the bearings as you remove it, or it will seem to not come out.

Ditto what Cooter said. That clunk is likely the cam falling off the bearing journal and on to a lobe. To slide it the rest of the way out, you'll need to angle the cam up and down a slight amount to get the lobe up off the bearing and to align the journal with the next bearing. Be careful doing this as you can nick and scrape the bearings and ruin them if you try forcing the cam out or by dragging teh lobes over the bearings.

that clunk sounds like the journal falling out of the bearing and then a lobe is hanging up.  Helps to screw a long bolt into the front of the cam to give you some leverage in keeping the cam aligned with the bearings so it will come out without ruining the bearings

if you rotate the cam the lobes will lift it enough to keep sliding it forward
