What lights do what?
« on: December 02, 2011 - 06:02:21 AM »
I was checking over the lights on the Challenger yesterday and I noticed that my front markers aren't working and neither are the lights on the front valance. Which ones are flashers and which aren't? I plan on going over all the light wiring either today or this weekend and removing all the red electrical tape and replacing it either with black or the plastic wire hiding stuff.

So far I haven't found too many gremlins. The dash lights don't work, no dome light, headlights strobe a little when the hazards are on(sounds like a ground to me) Headlight switch is a pull type, not a toggle, no seat belts but I think I have a set kicking around in the garage.

the valance lights ae turn & park , the sides are just park lights , start with grounds , that is often the problem

Got the markers and the valance lights working now. They still strobe a little when the hazards are on, and the turn signals are only flashing a little. Is that a problem with the flasher relay, or is it ground related too, or is the switch in the column shot? The hazards did the same thing on the Cuda, but I know the cam in the column was shot because it only clicked in one direction

Are the rears working?  If the rears are flashing properly when the turn signals are engaged then it's not the flasher.  Ditto with the hazards.

Turn signals and hazards use different flashers (at least in 74).  One is on the column the other is mounted next to the ash tray (again in 74).

The rears just do a quick flash. It's not rhythmic when they flash. The best way to describe it would be 'on off on off off on on off on off' sort of thing. I'm going to give everything a good looking over on the weekend while I'm waiting for my brake pads to get here.

None of the lights are flashing properly, but they do something that resembles morse code. I pulled the bulbs in the trunk and replaced a couple of cooked bulbs and figured out that I need to adjust the brake light switch a little.
I think I might see if I can find a 3 way toggle to use as my headlight switch because the push/pull that's in there now pulls out if you don't do a twist/push/push a little to the side/pull kind of motion.

, start with grounds , that is often the problem
:iagree:
Hard to overstate how important that is. Iffy grounds can cause pretty peculiar electrical behavior.
Take apart and remake all your ground connections. Terminals corrode, oxydation between lug and body that 'LOOKS' like a good ground. Clean the sheet metal where the ground is located. I like to use star lock washers. Not sure if they are better, but I like'm  :grinyes:
Battery to rad cradle, battery to engine, engine to firewall, rear light sockets need to be kept corrosion free, etc...

I have had to peen the sockets in the housings with an sharp center punch to make the grounds work in the housings at times
