major front end rattle
« on: December 08, 2011 - 12:43:31 PM »
I got the Challenger on the road today and took it for a few spins for gas, dogfood and fun. The front end felt like it had a little wobble right away, but it was nothing major. On the last trip out it started really shuddering a lot. I checked the lug nuts in case they'd backed off a little, but they were all good. Took off again and it was fine for a while, but then it started doing it again. The car doesn't have sway bars so I know it's not a bad link but I'm not sure where to even start looking other than under the front end of the car. Should I check torsion bars, brakes or the steering gear? It has power steering and power brakes and I know my front pads need to be replaced which is going to happen as soon as they get them in stock for me.
I'm planning on taking the car in for an alignment once I have all the other little gremlins evicted.

I would try to find the problem before taking it to an alignment shop.
check k-frame bolts ,tie rods, balljoints, pitman and idler arm.
what exactly do you feel or hear and at what speed?

I just took the car to a muffler shop close by and they threw it on a hoist for me. It turns out that my right ball joint is bad, it needs new front bushings and the shocks are shot. I'm going to order a bushing set, and pick up new ball joints and take it back to the muffler shop to change them out. The shocks I can do at home.

Glad you found it! I'd check/replace all the bushings. LCA, Upper control ar, and strut rod bushings. If they are original they will need replacing. :2cents:

Seeing how the car sat in another thread, I wouldn't have suspected the shocks were bad.

Glad you found the problem.

Once again, Roseville to the rescue. I called them up and ordered all the bits and pieces to rebuild the front end. I just ordered shocks through Auto Zone since I don't really need high end stuff and I'm pretty happy with the ones I put on the Cuda. I'm kind of hoping that the car keeps that stance with new shocks, cause I kind of like the way it looks.

Sometimes the tires develop a flat spot from sitting. Get both sides in rhythm and there's a whole lot of shaking going on.

The tires haven't been on a car for quite a while, but that was my first thought too. I found the front end parts from my 72 Charger and I'm going to swap out the ball joints for now until the parts get here from Roseville.

I was thinking about it a little and the best way to describe the vibration is 'running along rumble strips'

The top end of my power steering where the column goes into the big bit is puking out power steering fluid as well. I'm guessing a seal is either shot or missing, but that's going to be dealt with later.

Just got back from the mechanic. A whole 10 dollar bill later and the car feels a lot better.
