Anyone ever successfully disassembled a bumper jack assembly?
« on: January 10, 2012 - 02:42:51 PM »
I'm looking to refinish my jack but when I took a good look at it, it became apparent that these things were not meant to be taken apart. ie, the metal stops pressed into the mast to prevent the actual jack assembly from coming off, etc.

I suppose it could be blasted as an assembly and repainted (PITA) but it'd definitely be better to take it apart.

Anyone have any ideas / tips?

Most people just mask/repaint everything while it's still together.  I have heard of people spreading the mechanism open enough to remove it from the shaft.

Hmmm... Sounds like a job for my giant-sized flat head screwdriver. :-)

Have you found a gray paint that matches the original color?  Rustoleum Dove Gray used to be the color of choise but it has been discontinued.  Totally Auto sells jack paint but it's expensive.

Krylon discontinued there dove gray too. Krylon does have 3551 classic gray which is close and I have used it for my jack.

Maybe it was Krylon and not Rustoleum.  I havn't heard of a good cheap replacement yet.  If you are doing multiple jacks, I can see spending the money on the Totally Auto paint.  If you're just doing one, it's kind of hard to spend $25 plus shipping.

I thought about just using primer and spraying a gloss clear over it.  I know every manufacturer has a slightly different shade of primer.

I googled Rustoleum Dove Gray the other day and it showed that Grainger industrial supply sells it. I called them and they seemed to think they had it, just not in my local store. They said they could ship it to the store in my town.

I'll let you know if I'm able to get it.
