K-Member Coins
« on: December 20, 2011 - 01:52:37 PM »
I searched the threads I could find on this subject. What I found was everyone questioning if the 1971 and later cars should have a coin on them, never seem to come up with an answer. So has anyone ever found out if a 71 should have a coin? Specifically a hemi car.

do you mean the skid plate on the bottom? If so, I believe all 71 hemis had them. I think all big blocks had them too. I could be wrong about that.

He's talking about the metal coin that's welded to the K-member with the last 2 digits of the part number on it......or was it a date code?   No coin on the 73's.  I've wondered when that was stopped.

Bette than the coins, K members are date stamped.  Right next to the where the coin is or should be.
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.

I am not worried about the date stamp. I got a clone K-Member made and it has the coin on it with a 76 on it, just wondering if they really had them on the 71's, I know the 70's did.

If one came on a 71 it would be an early production 71.

From Galen...

"Mid 1970 and newer K-Frame applications have a round or oval coin welded to the face of the K-Frame with the last 1 or 2 digits of the part number stamped (up-side-down) into the face of the coin."

Your clone K-member with 76 would be a late 70  or 71 hemi.  Also 71 B Body hemi.  You can get any coin number you want if needed.  They re-stamp them.  That's why I look for the date code now.

The search feature is not working right. I had trouble finding this thread.  It may answer some questions.
