Rear valance with cutouts mounting
« on: January 15, 2012 - 12:15:46 AM »
My original valance was a non-cutout and I'm putting an exhaust cutout valance on. It looks like there are mounting holes in the center of the valance to the structure behind the valance. I don't remember how it was originally attached. Are there holes/bolts that attach the center of the valance to the car? Also my new valance is a re-pop. I suppose it would have made sense to work out these details before paint but here I am.

I can post pictures if necessary.

Thanks

if you are talking about the triangular brace on the valence, the  70 Challengers didn't have this  brace.  this will have to be removed.  it's for 71 and up.

Hmm, that makes sense. Yeah, so the one I bought was from many years ago and I didn't realize until this summer (post paint) that it was for a 71. I have seen another 70 with the same valence though.

I'll have to see if the old valence is still around. I'm not sure if it is. Will those brackets bolt to the one I have or should they have?

Yes - those brackets should bolt to the new valance.  I had the same issue as you.  I ordered a 70 repop and it shows up with all the brackets that  71 had.  I cut off what wasn't "original" and did the body work before painting.  If I remember correctly, I had to drill the holes in the valance for the brackets.

71+ just had one bracket welded to the center of the valance.  The triangular lisense plate bracket was 73 and 74 only....because the bumpers were move farther out.  You can't really see the center mounting bracket unless you're looking for it.  If it bothers you, put the 1970 only brackets on.  If not, save yourself some work and leave it.  If removing the center bracket will mess up the paint, I'd just leave it alone.

I've seen another 70 with the license plate bracket and I discussed it with them at length. I think I don't care that much at this time. The possibility of ruining the paint isn't worth it yet.

The center welded bracket for mounting. Since my car wasn't built for that bracket, how is it attached? I'll need to duplicate that method.

Thanks.

The 71-74 style just uses two screws to hold it to the rear x-member.  If there aren't any holes in the x-member, then install the end studs/nuts and hold the center of the valance where it looks right.  Mark and drill the two holes.  OR if someone with a 71-74 has a measurement of the original holes, they could post them.

Thanks. I'll probably just mark where the holes line up and drill the holes.

The valance will move up and down in the center.  I'd have the bumper on and adjust the valance so it lines up with the bottom of the bumper.
