Judge this car for me
« on: January 25, 2012 - 06:25:15 AM »
I have a buddy that asked me about this car.  I guess because I have a 'Cuda, I must know all there is to know about Mopars, right?  LOL

Anyway, help me out with this one guys.  It's a 1972 340-4 Challenger, 4 speed manual, with asking price of $23,500.  There is no mention of vin or fender tag.

Does this car look like it is worth asking some questions about or should I tell him to run.  Don't beat around the bush with me, this is really for a friend, not for me.  LOL

Thanks

.,

He doesn't mention if it's numbers matching or not.

Those are 70 seats, but other than that, it's a nice car. The price might be a tad high if it's not numbers matching.   :2cents:

I thought the price sounded a little high, but I have had my car for a long time with no intention of ever selling it.  I have not kept up with current price/value of these cars.

For that 72, condition and originality is probably going to be the main drivers of price.  The condition looks decent, but you really can't tell from the pictures.  You'd need shots of the trouble areas (cowl, trunk, floor pans, rockers, frame rails, etc).  For originality you need to find out if the car is numbers matching, has a fender tag, and build sheet. If it has all those you can start looking at the other items which are commonly replaced (radio, battery, etc).

For that price I would expect it to be numbers matching, have a fender tag and build sheet, have better than driver quality paint/chrome, and be virtually rust free.  I would start knocking off $ for the items I found lacking.

Assuming it's numbers matching, has a fender tag or build sheet, has the typical rust, less than show paint/chrome, and has had some stuff replaced, I would offer more in the 15-20 range.

Visually, the car looks to represent well a '72 Rallye 340 4 speed car but there are the already mentioned issues by Mike and Jamiez not clearly addressed.

Unless it's a fresh resto with fender tag/build sheet and matching numbers engine and such matching the fender tag/build sheet, that price is too high.  It's nice car for what it is, but like what Jaimez mentioned with these later '72-'74 cars, originality and condition is what makes the price.  Already doesn't have the right seats/wheels, possibly the wrong colored interior as some of these that came in Super Blue (assuming that's the original color) could have had a blue iterior, which is harder to replace than a more commonly found black interior, especially like Mike mentioned it has '70 seats.  Also wrong engine color.

If the body hasn't had a fresh resto and it's in generally good shape I wouldn't mind paying $15-$18k.

I'm not sure, but I seem to remember reading that the engine color switched in mid-72?

I think it was mid '71 or something like that.  I think all 340s in 1972 were blue.  My car is an early '72, SBD 8/17/71, and it has a blue engine.
