Question about SEMA..
« on: November 25, 2011 - 01:50:52 AM »
Me and a buddy of mine are considering a trip to Vegas next year when SEMA is on.

What does it take to get into SEMA? I heard one have to be an important car dealer of some sort... Or can average Joe like me get in too?
If we don't qualify to get in, is there anything going on outside SEMA at that time?

Would it be worth the trip? Anyone been?

Take this FWIW because my experience is many years ago.  You had to be 'in the business' to get in.  I worked as a counterman at a local auto parts store in Las Vegas and nudged one of our HP parts and accessories suppliers for application paperwork.  I never had any trouble getting credentials, and after the first year, SEMA sent me a registration packet every year.  I think I went to 5 in a row before moving.  But I don't know if they've 'tightened up' since then.

So if you know someone who works at a parts store, or warehouse/distributor you might tap them to see if they can get you signed up or at least access to applications.

Comdex (RIP) and CES were actually harder to get into than SEMA back then, but with all the more recent TV coverage, Overhaul shows, etc, who knows what its like now.

What does it take to get into SEMA?

If you are even remotely involved in some way, fashion, or form to the automobile industry, you qualify.
Take any type of item made on a car or invented in the last 100 years. If your profession has any connection, you qualify. You'll need to be resourceful, and careful on what you say/write on the registration. Your other choice is to ask any of your car friends in the industry if they go and if they can 'Hook you up'

...is there anything going on outside SEMA at that time?

Tons of cars and sideshows just out in front for public to see.

Would it be worth the trip? Anyone been?

Been 3 times and I'll be going again next year. It falls on Halloween for 2012.

The Halloween party on the RIO VIP lounge on top of the roof is one you don't want to miss.
Wear a costume if you go or be square.

Forgot to mention I live in Norway.. Do you have to be connected to an American dealer or parts supplier..?
If there's enough going on the outside of SEMA we might go anyway. If there are cars to look at that is..

Also, always wanted an excuse to buy and wear a Darth Vader costume..

People from every nation in the world come to SEMA. I've met people from places like Zumbabwe.
