Damn Hyundai Sonata A/C
« on: May 31, 2011 - 07:00:51 PM »
So the A/C in the wife's Sonata (2006) quit.  Just a few days after we got her Mustang home and only 700 miles since the warranty ran out.

 :banghead:

Well, it is what it is.  LOL

Blower blows fine....temp adjuster goes from hot (in the red zone) to warm in the blue zone....so no cold air in other words.

So I have it diagnosed to the point where there is power going to the clutch power lead. No clutch action in AC or defroster mode.

Low side pressure is at 100lbs which is too high, but I was told that that is normal when the compressor is not running.

I dont have the gauge for the high side.

I am thinking that the clutch gave up the ghost.   Its in such a PITA spot, and I have no experience with A/C so likely taking it to a shop.....but just so I dont get screwed I would like to figure it out....

Anyone have A/C experience??

This one is gonna hurt money wise I am betting.

If you have power to the clutch and it's not kicking on sounds like it's bad. Try to tap the clutch with a screw driver, sometimes they are weak and with a tap it will kick in. They are easy to put on as long as you can get to it. If you have to pull the compressor the system will have to be drained, vacuumed and refilled. So you'll need the line set, a vacuum pump and the R134 of course. Good luck.  Matt

Oh and being that close to the warrenty going out I'd take it in and see if they will work with you.

Don't know if this helps, but my wife's new 2006 Honda Civic had the same symptoms. We took it in to get it checked out and we were told it needed a new condenser.
I agree about seeing if they'll work with you since it's so close to the end of the warranty.

There is an A/C Clutch Relay under the hood in one of those relay boxes on the fenderwell IIRC...Tap on it and see if it comes on...If not......

There's a pressure switch you can "Jump" to force the compressor to run...Careful though, as there will be NO CYCLING OF COMPRESSOR while you have the pressure switch "Jumped"...So only do this to varify that the compressor clutch is working...I got a feeling it is just low enough to where it won't cut the compressor on....100 LBs on the low side not running only tells you there's "Something" in the system..May not be enough...You will need to get a service manual to find the pressure switch, but it is usually located in one of the lines...If the pressure switch has THREE (3) or more wires, DO NOT JUMP IT as you won't know which wires go straight to the compressor and which go back to that auto climate Bullsh*t...

Can you hear any sounds from the clutch at all? If not then I think it seems like the clutch has gone bad.

Yes if you are getting power to the compressor that would rule out the switch

Many people love the Sonata. It is a fantastic, family-friendly sedan that could be driving each day. It has a sporty look, comes with a ton of extra benefits, and is inexpensive. Most dealers will recommend it to you if you ask for the best recommendation for a family car. The car dealerships in Houston are especially helpful in helping you get everything you need in an automobile. To find a car dealership in Houston that can help you, look into Hyundai Sonata dealership Houston.

HA HA HA HA HA,my wifes 2001 Hyundai XG300 just got back from a dealer where they had to replace the front frame. Its a total POS!Then they handed her an estimate for work needed ---$3300 worth and the car only has 72000 miles on it.My opinion is they should all get loaded back up and sent back to where they came from.Oh why did I trade my Caddy in on it.

Yep...turns out it was a bad clutch...had the dealer replace it and it was actually relatively cheap.....like $270 as I recall....the part is $150 or so.....but getting to it is a PITA.

Worth every cent.

Fast forward to the last month or so, now having problems with the A/C in my Durango, and my motorcycle's engine died.....when it rains it pours......but one great thing -- brought a new bike home last evening.  :)
