Car stolen- time for a new one
« on: January 26, 2012 - 09:38:50 PM »
My wife's 1990 Camry got stolen, so it's time to look at Asian sedans to replace it. Anyone know anything about Hyundai? Not even sure I'm spelling it right.

I have an 04 Elantra, which is OK, not great, not lousy. I drove an 11 Elantra on a recent trip, and aside from the fact that I think it's butt-ugly, it was a great car. Handled predictably and well, quick, 6 speed auto, and real world 40 mpg, as well as a manumatic trans. I'd expect similar things from the Sonata.

Hyundai's are getting very good press.  They have Honda/Toyota quality at a lower price.  Go to the library and look at the Consumer Reports review or check Edmunds online.  We know a friend with a Sonata and he thinks it's the best car he's owned.

My oldest daughter has had 2 Hyundai tiburon's the first one is 2000 model  and  has loved to go thru wheel bearings over the years. Since 2005 I have replaced every wheel bearing on the car twice and one of them 3 times. An the overdrive has had problems for the past 5 yrs, as long as you don't use overdrive its ok , also has had  crank sensor issue twice and now the rack pinion is shot,, but is still being driven by my youngest daughter now at 180,000 so it been ok in a ways but still pricey parts for repair's..
My oldest now has a 2010 model although she loves it it has had trouble starting if low on fuel , also the tranny started slipping when first taking off and has had a wheel bearing replaced and a few other smaller issues and only has 25,000 miles on it,,so everything is still under warranty but I don't like it and when warranty is out, then the parts are high on these cars,,so my opinion is very low on these as dad is the one that has to fix them when warranty is done . Alot of people like them but I give a thumbs down as they haven't impressed me personally .
The 2010 shouldn't have had these problems so quick , but could just be the lemon that sometimes is out there.
So that's  my experiences with the Hyundai  :2cents:

2002 was the first year of a "new" Hyundai commitment to quality, earmarked by the launch of the first 10/100 warranty. I bought a Sonata that year and put 187,000 on it before it was viciously attacked by a deer. No unscheduled maintenance during that time.

It's not a fluke or the company would be broke with warranty claims.

 :iagree:

I've only had one serious issue with mine, and I think that was caused by a fluke piece of dirt in the trans. I shut it down, let it cool a little and restarted and it never came back.

My daily drivers are a Honda and an Acura.

The quality of Hyundai/Kia cars has surprised me. The last two years when returning home for Xmas I got one Hyundai rental (Accent?) and one Kia (Forte). The Forte was nicer, but the Accent, being a bare bones car was far better than I had anticipated.
