Streeing box removal and stripped header bolts
« on: March 03, 2012 - 11:03:59 AM »
I finally got the rebuilt 440 in the Cuda  running after 6 years of sitting, runs great, but the steering box leaks like a sieve, now to make matters worse trying to get this out is a PITA , in the process I have two stripped TTI  header bolts (head of the bolt) and how in the hell do I get these bolts out now, I almost to point of cutting the header off with saw-all to get a set of vise grip on the bolt and just replace the header.  :banghead: :pullinghair: :stomp: Any advice before I get this extreme please help a novice........and I still have to get the f%^$$ing  :swear: box out ......it's going to feel firm for a stage III rebuilt.

I swear by these things:

http://www.google.com/products/catalog?hl=en&sugexp=eqn,fixedpos%3Dfalse,boost_normal%3D20,boost_high%3D1000&gs_nf=1&cp=8&gs_id=1f&xhr=t&q=bolt+remover&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.,cf.osb&biw=1024&bih=639&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=7657507029202909500&sa=X&ei=vkJST6rcAq-00QGQ49nHDQ&sqi=2&ved=0CFYQ8wIwAg

When I've had a bolt that's completely rounded I've hosed it in Liquid Wrench, then I'll take the next smaller bolt remover and hammer it onto the bolt head.

I have those, they work great, got mine at Sears. I used them to get the antitheft lugs off when I first got my car.( no key) I don't know if there would be enough room near a header for these though? :dunno:   I'm with David,,,hammer on a metric socket or what ever fits?

I`ve had a similar problem years ago. I did what Brad says,  hammer on a smaller ( maybe metric?)  socket ,  but I heated the bolt head first with a small torch... white hot.
then hit the socket in place and let it cool down.  This way you make a nice fit.  It the bolt is hot enough you wont need too much force to get it on, just speed.

Update:
Took a Dremel Multi-Max Oscillating Tool and was able to cut the head of the bolt, the one behind the header tube (couldn't get a socket on that one) with several blade changes, got a set of grip tite round bolt sockets which worked great....unbolted the motor mounts and jacked up  the motor and pesto steering box on the ground...thanks for your suggestions especially the rounded nut socket recommendation, that did the trick
