is it stolen?
« on: January 28, 2012 - 01:13:55 PM »
Is there any way to run a vin # as in on the internet to find out if a car is stolen or not ? I just don't want to do a t22b vin inspection with johnny law and find out my car is stolen.  If I have to I will cut the car up but I don't need to go to jail. I live in central Georgia and I am not familar with their law. Thanks for any help.Steve

Not that I know of.
I have tried numerous routes to do this.

If you have a friend in law enforcement, it is possible for them to do it.
They won't do it for the general public like you want though.

I have heard that Alabama is a state that makes it easier to research the car though.
Havn't tried there.

Good luck!

Steve,i believe in ga you can ask dmv to run the vin,if you bought the car with a bill of sale you can go back after the seller. You should check the vin just think if it was your car stolen,i have had one stolen from me. not cool

I had similar concerns about a 77 Trans Am I had bought a few years ago. When rebuilding it, it became very obvious that the vin had been swapped when the hidden panel stamps didn't match the dash. I found the build sheet and it had the full vin that matched the body stamps. I called the cops out and they ran both vins the national and state database and nothing came back. The way to cop explained it to me was that those databases only go back so far, and if it happened so long ago that it would have been wiped out. The cop gave me the report number so that I could file a civil suit if I wanted to for misleading information or something along those lines. But I don't think that you need to be concerned about going to jail. I wasn't - I just know that if I try to sell that car I'll have to disclose everything that I now know to the next buyer. Call the cops, get them to run it, no sweat....

Although just know that if it turns out it is stolen, they will impound the car right there on the spot.

I guess I did phrase that a little lightheartedly.

I don't know what your situation is. But for me - I wanted to know right then if it was stolen before I sunk any more money into rebuilding it. Calling the cops was the best option for me.

What is making you think that it could be stolen?
