Slap stick linkage

I'm posting a few pics of my slap stick linkage as it looks now, specifically the torsion spring, does is look right??
It is sort of haphazardly hooked in to the lever, and does not seem to do much at all.

Looks like mine?  I guess it's supposed to apply pressure on the linkage to push it forward.

It looks like the vertical rod might not be straight, spring should lay a little more flat maybe.

I just added that spring to my linkage in my car after 11 years of it not being there.  It does look a little hooky the way it lays, but it did take up the remaining slop that had been there.  Yours looks about like mine and the spring angle changes a lot from park to 1st.

  Thanks folks, just wanted to be sure I was not missing a part or had the spring in wrong.  I will check for bent parts.
