T/A adjustable rocker adjustment question
« on: January 23, 2012 - 12:54:28 AM »
I'm just wondering if my clearances look normal. I did 1.5 turns last time, his time I went with a half turn.

1/2 turn from when the plunger STARTS to compress. Correct?

I would go at least 3/4 turn , I have found the lifter compresses when sitting & may drop a pushrod once the lifter has bled down

from the picture,
just wondering if you have enough room, for Oil to get into the pushrod cup to lube the adjuster at only 1/2 to 3/4 turn ?
Don't want to smoke any adjuster tips.....just checking

My understanding, is 1,  to max 2 adjuster threads, showing below the Rocker Arm to allow Oil to get in ?

Maybe your pushrods are a little too long to allow this, when, only compressing the Lifter plunger the prescribed 1/2 to 3/4 turn ?
Has the Block or Heads been milled ?

I agree with Mike, looks like the pushrods are too long if that's the fully adjusted picture. It looks like the pushrods are nearly making contact with the bottom of the rocker, and you have a lot of threads showing on top of the adjuster.

I believe you're supposed to have at least one full thread of the adjuster showing below the rocker.

Not likely. Lash caps will make the valve side taller, so the adjuster side would be even lower, and you're already too low. Looks to me like you need shorter pushrods, not taller valves.

You can have pushrods made, I had to have a set made up for my 340. I used Smith Brothers, they can make you anything you want. http://www.pushrods.net/

Not cheap (mine were about $200), but much better quality than stock. And, any size you need.

ok i suspected if i took the lash caps off it would reset my rocker geometry back to a more stock like setting. im not sure if the geometry was all that correct when i tore the first cam out of it, and i should have paid more attention to this when putting the new cam in. unfortunately im a push rod engine noob and have always had ohc engines. so this was a definitely learning point for me, i just hope i didnt damage my new cam in the process by wiping a lobe or eating a lifter.

here is how everything is adjusted out with no lash caps

looks much better!

also it seems i have some excessive side/side rocker play, is there a way to measure this with a feeler gauge? what is the min/max?
