70 Barracuda 383 resto project
« on: April 16, 2012 - 04:28:27 PM »
Hey Guys,
I just joined this site about 4 hours ago, made my introduction in the newb section.
I am restoring a 70 Barracuda for a long time friend/customer of mine. The car has been in his family since 1974, but has not moved (until friday) since 1977.
I really want him to spend the money to put it back as close to original as possible, but it is missing the original engine and transmission. And the evidence kinda shows this car was bastardized many years ago. Big hole cut in one of 2 hoods and a fiberglass prostock looking scoop added. OEM wheels are gone, nice 14" x 10" Aluminum Slots in thier place. Body work and repaint evidence all over it, engine compartment looks to have been spray painted black at some point (unless that was an OEM kinda thing, I really doubt i tho)
Steering center link was cut and a U welded in to it (he was told his brother was attempting to install a 426 when it was parked for good)
Anyway.
I am trying to decipher the fender tag using the lists I have found here, but im coming up short on a few numbers. I was wondering if anyone would like to help out the new guy

WOW thanks yall!
So this is not the special 335 HP 383? Basically the engine should be blue?

Would that be the Black stripe from the rear of the quarter forward? or literally just a pinstripe?

Check EV2 color of that Hamtrack-link, there is picture of V5W. (Hockey stick stripe is V6X)

N-code engines on BH (Barracuda) & BP (Gran Coupe) models have 330hp and on BS ('cuda) models 335hp.
I think at it's blue even with manual trans because of A/C.
I've heard orange engines with manual trans without A/C, but can't remember saw any.

What is that on the rockers? Was that part of the V5W trim also? Looks like louvers...

H51 = A/C. Check the firewall holes.
"Fish gills" rocker moldings are std on -70 'cuda (except AAR), not available for other models or years.
Hockey stick stripes are also only -70 'cuda thing, forgot to mention earlier.

Cool car.

I would leave off that body side moulding.  Ugly IMHO.

Yes, you definitely have AC.  Just all the lines and compessor removed, but I'm sure you still have the AC lines from the heater box poking through the firewall.  Don't get rid of it.  AC plus 4-speed is cool!

the moldings and the rocker lovers are gone. Found out a bit more about the car. In 1975 it went through a house, backwards! The guys were tinkering with it started it through the window, it was in reverse and it blasted its way through the front of the house! That explains the quarter panel repair and over all paint job.

There are no A/C lines or even extra holes on the firewall.. if someone took it out, they covered the holes nicely.. Which might explain the black paint in the engine compartment.

Definitely not a AC firewall, might have been changed, but doubtful.

Ya, either the firewall got changed, or the whole car is a re-body. :22yikes:

I really doubt that it was changed.. Is it possible that plymouth stamped the data plate wrong? I suppose the holes could have been welded up, and then painted over, since the rest of the engine compartment is black..  :poopoke:
