Removing the front fenders....question?
« on: November 09, 2013 - 01:52:18 PM »
Ok I've had the US Cartool cowl braces for over a year now and figure I'd like to get them welded in this winter.
I obviously need to remove the front fenders to do this. Can I get away with just removing the front valance and fenders or does the bumper , grill , etc??? need to come off?
Anything to watch out for? Like antenna etc?
  thanks!

Do you want to save the paint on them ?

If so I would say the bumper needs to come off. Be too hard to snake them out around it, if it's even possible. :2cents:

Yes. I would remove the grille.  When the fenders are off there is not much to hold the grille.  Also you will have to pull the fender around the grille corners.  There is a chance of damage to the grille when you do this. You have to take the bumper off to take the grille out.  I would take the valance off, then the bumper at the frame, leaving the bumper attached to the bumper brackets.  Then I would remove the grille.  Lastly, I would pull the fenders.  You will need a helper.  It is a two person job.

:iagree: with Tod, Remove everything forward of the front fenders Brad, the headlight panel itself is a real pain in the butt as the fender has to travel forward to clear radiator brackets, the right way in this case is the best way, you would get so frustrated in yourself if you did it any other way buddy. :2thumbs:

Remove it all or cover it real well with a welding blanket.  You would hate to ruin them by getting slag all over the place.  It's imperative that you cover the windshield.  One piece of slag will destroy it.  Good luck.

Ya, unfortunately, you are only gonna have the hood left in place. everything else has got to come off.

Wow thanks Andy :2thumbs: , not sure when I'll get to it? Sometime this winter I guess?  Luckily I'm busy work wise now.

Well, you just let me know. A trip up north sounds good to me. And I installed that bracing, so I know how
the puzzle is put together.
