stainless steel coatings ?
« on: March 24, 2012 - 09:26:45 PM »
I have seen chrome that was tinted to be certain colors but still have a shinny core.

Don't like the silver for what I am planning.

Looking at getting polished and show ready trim and would like to have it a dark red tint.

Anybody see this before?

Who offers this service or where do I get what it takes?

I have found a couple of red chrome services.

Has anyone here had any experience with chroming products like the stainless steel on the exterior of the car?

Any idea of how long a life on the chrome plating?

What about clear powder coat with a red tint? Powder coating guys now have the ability to do almost anything paint guys can do.

I have considered powder coating.
Especially since I have a powder coater within 75 miles of me.

However, after looking at several different powdercoating jobs done on an array of materials, I am somewhat unhappy with the system.

From rust coming through to areas with less powder than the next to inconsistent coloring.
I know that it depends on the shop that is doing the work but there seems to be alot of inconsistencies.

This is why I have been looking into colored chrome on the stainless.

Just wondering if anyone has used this type of product and how long the coatings will last.

I know that bumper chrome will peel if bent or in the weather for many years.

powder will fade pretty quick when exposed to sun.  step into a gun shop and see what they come up with?

I had not thought of that.
They do lots of plating.

I would think a clear red anodize would ideally be the best.

I like that.  Not as shinny as the chrome.
The flatness of that would match well with my plans.

That is powder coated though right?
So I would purchase this and give it to my powdercoater.
Still reading through the site.

Painting stainless steel with anything eliminates the "stainless" part of it, and you can get rust in airtight pockets under the coating.  What prevents rust on stainless steel is a layer of chromium oxide, and if you prevent oxygen from getting to the chromium (with a clearcoat, etc) the steel can rust just like normal steel.

That said, it may still work fine, just don't be shocked if the stainless does funny things under the clearcoat.

Thanks for letting me know.  I have not run into that yet.

This is the first time I will be trying to change stainless steel to look like a different product.
