If you use the same shop to do the primer application after they sandblast, make darn sure they clean that car up good!!! Friend of mine had an old pickup done (sandblasted and then sprayed with etching), but they did not clean up the very well after. He basically had to hand sand it back down to get rid of all the particles stuck under the etching primer.

I sandlbasted my chally this past month myself, and i am still cleaning and getting it ready to shoot with primer. It is hot and dry here and it has been in my garage, but i am still taking precautions before i shoot it.
I am going with PPG's epoxy DP50LF.

Even though you may not see any rust metal starts rusting almost immediatley if not coated so you need to clean and prime as soon as you can.The other option is to use a metal prep which is basically a mild acid to clean and help with adhesion and then prime which is all I`ve ever done using the DP epoxy primer. You can then grind/clean the area you need to do welding, bodywork etc. and reprime that area when done.

The shop who did mine put a weld-through self etching primer all over the car.  I definitely think this is a must have, and I was charged about 400 more for it.

Just remember when using etch primers you can’t apply it and then push the car back outside, it has to have a sealed surface over it, water will reverse the reaction and will pull the zinc back out.
Use PPG DP50 epoxy primer or other over it.

And one of the issues that e-tek mentioned with epoxy is that it still absorbs moisture over time. So my body guy sanded all of the weldthrough primer off before doing the actual high fill/sanding/paint primer/sanding/base etc etc etc. He said that if you leave old epoxy primer on then paint you could end up with moisture bubbles at some stage. I did not want that as I spent around $17,000 for body and paint. And this painter has done a couple of Hot rod show winners so he probably knows what he is saying.

Would(acid) that be equivalent to like eastwoods metal ready. If i read the instructions correctly, you wipe this acid on and off, and then wash with water to get rid of the acid. Doesn't the water start the rusting process all over again? At that point i better be ready for the primer?  Is the acid the only way to get in to pitted metal to get at the rust? Any other suggestions for pulling rust from pitted metal.( i am talking very small pits, such as from a sand blaster)

Yes the acid is the same as metal ready and obviusly you need to thoroughly dry and prime right after rinsing off.

Oh boy, do i have my work cut out for me. When you wash the acid off, do you use a rag and a bucket of water or just run a water hose over it?

This is a great thread I found.

I am doing the major sheetmetal work before going to the blaster.

Can someone sum up the proper sequence?

major metal work
blast
acid wash (optional?)
Etch Primer (optional?)
epoxy primer
body filler work
epoxy primer
High build primer (with-in 7 days??, what is the topcoat window as mentioned)
Block sand
wet sand
base coat
clear coat
wet sand
Buff

how did I do ! ??    :faint:
