Small Block Starter To Clear TTI Headers?
« on: April 20, 2012 - 03:04:43 PM »
I may very well need a new starter for my 71 Cuda 340 4-speed and have a question. I just have stock manifolds now but intend on installing a set of TTI headers in the near future. Do I need to get a special starter or that to use with headers or will just a stock one fit?  :clueless:
Thanks
'Tim"

I'd go to a parts store and buy a starter from a mid 90's Dakota.  They are the same starter as the expensive MP ones you can buy and they will bolt up just fine.  You could even go to a salvage yard and find one cheaper.  You'd have to put some time in to cleaning it up though.

The newer starters aren't affected by heat as much as the original style which is a big + with headers.  Some people really like that old Chrysler starter sound though.  You lose that with the new starters.

Yeah, I miss that old Mopar starter sound, but that starter was heavy.

I have the modern mini, and my header tubes are REAL close to it, but it fires up just fine after I've been driving a while.

I like that classic Chrysler sound and would want that.
Just wanting to make sure that the starter I buy, if I do need one, won't be an issue with the TTI headers when I go to instal them.

Doesn't TTI list what is needed/fits?

I will take a look on the TTI site to see what they say as to any mention of starters?
Was just hoping that somebody with a 340 cuda has TTI headers on now and could advise first hand.

I went onto the TTI website and the starters that will fit are listed so all is good. Thanks for the suggestion.
