Fan shroud clearance question
« on: May 31, 2012 - 09:52:38 PM »
he mechanic who is installing my engine on my Challenger is concerned about the clearance of the fan to the fan shroud. The clearance is probably 1/2 an inch between the edge of the fan blade and the fan shroud. My car is coded for the 26" max cooling package which includes the fan shroud. The mechanics concern is that the torque of the engine with the twisting on the motor mounts will cause the blades to hit the fan shroud. Has anyone had this problem? Does the pic look alright?

What mounts are you using , if you have Poly lock mounts the engine will not move

I bought the motor mounts at Napa. Just standard rubber motor mounts.

I have about .15" with stock mounts and not trouble.  You should be really fine with .5"

You'll know fairly quick if it's a problem.  Try going slow at the start to see if it hits, if not try a few more revs.
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.

A ton of room isn't really needed. A little bit of room for torque but not much. I have a fan clutch and could spin it easily by hand as I checked the clearance. I sat with a dremel for about 30 minutes and grinded the inside of the shroud until it fit without the fan hitting... No problems now... Haha

I'll add that I have Rubber mounts and it's about .0999 inches away in some places... Just get it started and listen for contact to double check. If it barely scrapes the inside under first start it won't hurt anything. Just widen the mounting holes and shift the shroud up or over giving you some more room
