Engine Oil Pan Leak
« on: April 21, 2012 - 12:01:50 PM »
After finding the car , I finally started to get the bugs out of the 383 mill after it had been rebulit 10 years ago with 200 miles on it. Well she leaked like a pig.....The main leak was at the Joints of the pan and the timing chain cover. The old gasket was cork so I assumed it had shrunk. (Cork gaskets with a windage tray not a good idea)

After useing a felpro blue steal lined gasket and installed it on the oil pan it still leaked. Now I understand that lots of us mopar nuts have had this problem, thinking it may be the timing cover may be bent at the bottom where it meets the oil pan.......

What the real problem was...... when they installed the timing cover they did not make sure the cover was tight and seated around the locating pins , so it was leaking behind the cover (you can see this from any angle while the engine is in the car) from the area around the locating pins down to the oil pan, then the oil moved to the rear of the car, making it impossible to locate the leak again........After 2 oil pan gaskets I learned the hard way, so a simple tap with a very small deep socket around the pins when installing will do the trick.... hope this post helps some of you when the time comes.....
