Pulley rant
« on: May 02, 2012 - 01:36:46 PM »
I have the 318 out of the Challenger and I'm getting the 440 ready to go in. I have 4 matched sets of pulleys around the garage so there shouldn't be a problem getting them to line up :pullinghair:

I have the power steering, crank pulley and alternator all lined up, or close enough that a washer here or there will get them lined up but I can't get the waterpump pulley to work. All the pulleys I have either don't line up with the crank pulley, or they bottom out on the 440 source water pump I installed. I'm thinking of going back to the old cast iron pump just for the clearance so I don't have to dig up more pulleys to test.

Is it possible to put a spacer between the water pump and the pulley to bump it out a little?

yes you can space the water pump pulley out a little .
the problem is a lot of the 440s had different pulleys in different years or options , also the cast damper changes the spacing on the crank pulley . I would make a round plate from the needed thickness alum for a spacer & glue into the rear of the water pump pulley

Thanks. I just checked and it turns out that my stock water pump and the 440 Source one are the same size anyway. I'm going to pick up some slightly thinker gasket paper and build a gasket for the water pump and then I'll tackle the pulleys. It sounds like the gasket that came with the set was a little thin because it sounds like it's bottoming out in the housing when I spin it by hand. I think it calls for a minimum 40 thick gasket

Alt , water pump and crank takes the same belt, power steering to crank takes its own belt on a bb 67 to 71 set up. 2 pulley lower crank pulley, you can have db or single belt alt pulley. Big block and small block are different pullies for water pump and no ac.  A deep sb water pump pulley will hit the water pump. The bb wp pulley for non ac is deep enough to come close to the 4 wp bolts.

under 60 bucks buys you the bb bracket system complete with bolts and spacers. and usually you can find a pair of pullies for your crank and wp for under 100 bucks.  This is the most simple way to do a stock set up with the correct system and speed ratio for fan and alt.  If you keep it simple, like what was designed. You will not throw any belts or end up with bearing ware n tear on bearings. Plus, you can buy stock stuff over the counter this way and know it should fit with no issues. Like stock size fan belt

I ended up using a double on the bottom and a double on the top. The alt belt uses the crank and water pump pulleys and so does the power steering. My top pulley is a little too big in diameter to let the ps belt run freely. They all line up nicely, but I will have to adjust the alt a little more before I go for a drive.
