Checking connecting rods
« on: April 28, 2012 - 12:10:49 AM »
Hi all,
My 360 is back from the machine shop, I'm getting ready to put things back together...

Is there an easy way for me to check the connecting rods ? The main and rod bearings were pretty trashed, the rods look fine, pistons look good too. But want to make sure I don't have a bent rod.

Thanks !

Were the big ends machined ?  you can check for twist by laying them on a flat surface if the pistons are not installed on the rods .
The machine shop should have checked them before they were machined though , what are you looking for ?

No, the rods where not machined. I just  basically want to make sure they are not bent or twisted and need to be replaced. The pistons are still on the rods and they are press fit...

Thanks !

Aside from a visual inspection, I don't think you can check the rods with the pistons attached.
When you say "trashed" bearings, you don't mean spun do you?
If I cant fix it, it's broke

I don't think the bearing were spun, bur really don't know how to tell. All of the bearings were in the correct position on the rods, but were really scored bad. The machine shop said it was due to the previous builder using anti-seize and the fact that the remote oil bypass plug was missing
