Kentucky Derby
« on: May 03, 2012 - 10:18:08 PM »
The holiest day on my calendar for sure. Loved horses since I was a kid, had numerous trail/show horses when I was young.
(spoiled brat only child) Went to work at the track when I was 18, was a hot walker, groom, pony girl, ex-girl, asst trainer.
Then owned several race horses in later years. Still love horse racing to this day. Have a good group of folks coming over on
Saturday, barbq and Mint Juleps, tears when they play "My Old Kentucky Home" as the horses come on the track, and we wear goofy
hats. And I will of course be dressed in Union Rags. Hope you all can get to a Derby party or at least a TV to witness the Greatest
Two Minutes in sports. Post time is 6:24pm EST. (NBC)

one of my favorite times of the year. I've worked with horses, but couldn't tell ya a thing about those race horses until Derby Day. Man I'd like to see a triple crown winner. Been so long!! Enjoy that mint julip, I'll be tuned in

Going there would be pretty cool thing to do.

We go to the Horse races a few times a year. It's fun when you win a bet on your pick.
Been a long time now since a Triple Crown.

re Triple Crown... how about Bob Baffert? Came within a nose and a length of winning 2 back-to-back, jeez.

Might be awhile before we see another Crown winner, just MHO. The American thoroughbred has become so
fragile and weak with generations of drugs being allowed while racing. When horses like Real Quiet and Silver
Charm come along and can be so competitive for 3 races spaced closely together, they're freaks. And Zenyetta
to a point, and Curlin. Back in the 60's-70's, colts would have 15 races under them before the Derby. Now 15
races is a career in some cases. I was blessed to see Cigar in person at Suffolk Downs when he won the 'Mass
Cap... in a romp.... the horse couldn't blow out a match in the winner's circle.

A 15 to 1 odd Horse won. Wow!
Not common. Came out on the outside edge.

Big payoffs to those that picked the Rookie.

The winner was a very 'legitimate' horse, won the Santa Anita Derby recently... and you can take the left coast horses seriously again since they switched SA back to dirt from plastic. Good for the jockey, 1st Derby, too young to realize he needs to be scared, rode a GREAT race from the 19 hole. Excellent Derby, not disappointed. Too bad the favorite walked out of the gate and his jock drove him into brick walls twice. Baffert came thisclose again, great horse and great trainer. Looking forward to Round Two at Pimlico in 2 weeks.  :2thumbs:
