May have a deal on wheels if they will fit
« on: May 17, 2012 - 07:25:39 PM »
I'm new to this site...I have been a Mopar guy for many years and a member over at dodge-charger.com for a long time. I sold my 68 Charger a few years ago and recently bought a 73 Challenger. My son and I have been fixing it up and enjoying it. I had a set of Torque Thrust II's on my Charger and really liked the look. I have a possible deal on a set of them with nearly new tires that I would like to put on my Challenger. They are 17" wheels and i'm not sure they will fit. I have to let the guy know pretty quickly. The wheel size is 17 x 8 with 4" backspace. The tires are 275/50/R17 for the rear and 215/50/R17 for the front. I can get the whole set for $900. Of course thats only a good deal if they will fit my bone stock small block Challenger.

I put in stock #s and what you provided and it seems doable  http://www.rimsntires.com/specs.jsp
Offset actually comes out the same as a 15X7 rim with 4.5" backspace.   Will there be to much to the outside would be my concern.

You mean too much outside the wheel well? What would be the best way to determine that without buying them and trying to fit them? I don't want to make a $900 mistake. Thanks for your help! I didn't realize wheel and tire fitment was so complicated until I started doing research this afternoon.  Its easier just asking a salesman what will fit....Unfortunately its a lot more expensive.

Using the link I posted above find the added width and diameter of new the tires, take those measurements to your car and plot them on your existing tires and see how close to the fenders your getting. Maybe make a cardboard template of the larger tire with the smaller(use what's on your car now) inside it then cut out the smaller.
Keep in mind that suspension travel will take the tires higher into the wheel wells.

I don't think there is a problem.  Just know that the rear tire height of 27.82 inches will fill the rear nicely - but it will also kill your torque.  I run 17x8 in front with 255's and 17 x 9 in the rear with 285/40's.  It works.

Yea you are fine I run a 17 x 8, 4 in. back space, and a 275\ 40 , on all 4 , you should be fine, but be sure to have some look while you move the car slowly and make sure everything clears

I have decided against buying the wheels. I can get a new set of 15 x 7 TT 2's shipped for $600 and then pick the tires I want. It will be a bit more when its all said and done but I don't have to compromise and get what I really don't want.

Thanks for all of your help. It's nice to have this resource.  :ylsuper:

I know today it is all about bigger wheels, but I'm glad you played it safe with 15". I hope you like them. Post some pictures when you get them installed.   :grinyes:
