Broken shock plate bolt.
« on: June 03, 2012 - 07:52:40 PM »
I was half finished installing an add-a-leaf on my 73 challenger. I had finished the passenger side ( Which went very smoothly) and was removing the lower shock bolt on the drivers side when the bolt snapped off. I had soaked all the bolts in PB Blaster but it still twisted off. I'm stuck. Any chance the bolt is like a wheel stud? Can it be knocked out and a new one hammered in? I have a bad feeling it's not going to be that simple. Can this be repaired or do I have to replace the whole mount? What's my best course of action? I have to believe i'm not the first idiot to do this.  :banghead:

I don't know the shock plate too well but if you look at the link, it looks like a stud that can be replaced, if this is the right part.

Maybe bolted from the other side, if that is the part that broke?  :dunno:

You can buy just the shock mount. I had to on one of mine too. Not a big job, but you need to drill out the old stud . Then grind it flat so the new one bolts on to a flat surface.

Thanks guys! Just ordered new stud from Mancinni. Would it be better to cut the stud off flush in the front and drill from there or drill from back side? I am curious if it's welded on the front flange. Maybe I could cut front off and grind through the welds then knock it out with a drift and hammer? I know it's prolly wishful thinking. I dread drilling it out

You can buy those studs at your local parts store.  You can also buy one that you weld back on.  If you have the plate off the car, you could just take it in and have the stud cut off with a torch.  Back in the early 90's that was done to my car.  Just torch off the stud and bolt the replacement on.

Called couple parts stores and they were clueless. Would be nice to find locally and get done tonight. Unfortunately no one seems to be able to find the stud at any nearby AP stores.

Thanks for the help finding the stud at Mancini's. She's fixed and back on the road! Easy job...Must drill the stud out..I had thought if I cut the wide part of the stud off I might be able to just knock it out. Unfortunately it has to be drilled. No biggie, it was quick and easy.
