Are there differences in the steering coupler?
« on: February 08, 2005 - 02:26:55 PM »
I just got my steering column back from SMS and I had it converted to a power steering column.  They didn't have any couplers for it and told me I would have find one on my own.  They did give me the new shoes and bushing for it.  My question is, is there any differences between the coupler on a manual vs. power steering column?

I'm not 100% sure but I think they are the same. I know the steerling shaft is shorter on a power steering car. I am making the same swap so I hope they are the same. Hopefully Chryco or someone else will know for sure.. Oh by the way, How long did SMS take to do the work?  It took them a year to do my A/C box.. :madvibe:.. seems to be a good job but a long time to do it..

most B & E body couplers are the same , there was a smaller spline used on some A bodies in the mid 60s I believe

I sent them my column back in September I believe.  At that point they told me they wouldn't get to it till the first part of January.  They were dead on.  Before they started work on it, they called me to make sure of what I wanted done and then I had it about a week and a half later.  I didn't mind the wait and was glad they were up front an honest about everything.
Max, I might take you up on that offer.  I do have a manual coupler (still need to get it off the steering box though) and will see if I can tell if it will work or not this weekend.
