I have issues and I have a Challenger. The flip top cap really makes things difficult with the vapor seal on the pump... It won't seal so the pump always clicks and stops like its supposed to when your tank is all the way filled. I have to repeatedly pull the handle until it is positioned just right. I need a regular gas pump!!

Aw man sounds like torture! I live in little California (aka Maryland ) and I'm not looking forward to this. This state seems to follow California in as many ways as possible. As for now I will gladly continue filling my car without hassle.

Many people complain about emissions laws today.
This gas recovery is just another one.

I'm not here as some kind of tree hugging, law abiding Mr. Do gooder.
Heck, I'm building a Godzilla Smog Monster!

But I can tell you a story:

Back in 69" or 70', my family & I; Took a trip to L.A. from N. CA.

When we got over the top of the grapevine, (Hwy 5) the smog was so thick, we had to turn on the headlights along like everyone else just so we could see where we where going. It was so bad it was like driving inside of a sewage pipe.

So it's a pain in the Arse this vapor recovery system is. However I do think it does help. Especially down near SoCal.

I would guess the newer cars have filler tubes designed for the vapor recovery nozzles. As for us, just be sure to have a napkin ready for that inevitable Burp. :puke:

i was just gonna say that if you have a flip top cap on a challenger you might as well remove it. back in 1990 when i first
got my '72. i put a flip top on it cause it was cool. and then i stopped at a gas station......... :stomp:  :swear: :stomp:  :swear:  :pullinghair:  :banghead:

it was quickly removed.

I have a 73 Challenger with flip top, and don't have a problem, but I have to go slow, but I'm used to that as my boat likes to burp gas, if I don't go slow.

I think a lot of it has to do with the volume (speed) of the newer pumps. I didn't have this problem in the 90's. I think they move fuel in the tank so fast that the tank/evap/vapor system (even if you have one) is not designed to move the volume of air being displaced by the fuel back to the nozzle. I wonder if adding an "air" return from the top of the vapor seperator to the top of the filler neck that is about 3/8"or larger would help. If you ever look at the vapor plumbing on newer cars at the wrecking yard, almost all the hoses that return air to the top of the filler neck or to the vapor canister/evap purge system are about 1/2 to 5/8" so they are expecting a huge volume of air to be moved around. Compare that to the 1/8 and 3/8 lines that go to the vapor seperator in the trunk and that the vapor line coming out of the seperator to the engine has a restrictor in it as well..
